Aloha Friday: Do it up rightFriday isn't just another day in Hawaii, a simple end to the work week. People here call it "Aloha Friday" and mean it -- it's time to reconnect with friends and family for beachside barbecues, go surf and hike and golf, be out among the paradise we call home. We get loose, we get happy. You'll see around Honolulu a number of recurring events on Aloha Friday celebrating our state of pau hana (done with work) bliss -- and if you're lucky enough to be here on vacation, then the party just continues for you. (We'll try very hard not to be jealous.) Of course, hundreds of restaurants, bars and clubs will have their own Friday night specials, but if you're in town, you don't want to miss:First Fridays: On the first Friday of every month, Honolulu's Arts District downtown throws open the doors to its galleries, and the many bars and restaurants host live music and DJs from here and beyond. The theaters in the area, if they aren't booked with a production, will do something special (Hawaii Theatre's second-floor piano bar opens for live music, Laughtrack Theater does half-price improv shows). You can dance all night in the clubs, from The Loft to NextDoor to SoHo Mixed Media Bar. This event attracts scenesters and the casual crowd in equal measure, but mostly it attracts everybody, so plan for parking accordingly (and consider taking a cab). Next one up: Friday, August 6. ARTAfterDARK: The elegant Honolulu Academy of Arts throws a themed soiree on the last Friday of every month, mixing delectables from area restaurants with drinks, live music and dancing in its open courtyards. Friday night fireworks: The Hilton Hawaiian Village throws a big Aloha Friday party at 7 p.m., with fireworks in front of the resort going off around 7:45. You can see them from afar hanging out on the beach at Waikiki or from the Ala Wai Boat Harbor, or join the fun at the Rockin'
Hawaiian Rainbow Revue at the resort's Super Pool –- close-up seats, live music, dancing and a cocktail for $20. Next one up: tonight! Photo: Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort & Spa. |
